About TRIUMF

TRIUMF is Canada’s particle accelerator centre. From the hunt for the smallest particles in the universe to the development of new technologies, including next-generation batteries and medical isotopes, TRIUMF is pushing the frontiers in research to advance science, medicine, and business. TRIUMF is located in Vancouver, Canada.

Program Requirements and Resources

If you are looking to start your career at TRIUMF, you will need to consider how to apply, when to apply, and the qualifications expected of incoming students and employees. Deadlines and expectations are different depending on your department and degree level.

TRIUMF is not a degree granting institution, and so some positions may need to be affiliated with a partner institute.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students from across Canada have the opportunity to join research teams at TRIUMF. Programs for undergraduate students include:

Cooperative Education and Summer Student Program

Open to students across Canada enrolled at institutions with partnered education programs. The jobs offered reflect the broad range of TRIUMF research,  including particle and nuclear physics, material and molecular science, accelerator science, nuclear medicine, as well as engineering and computing.

Erich Vogt First Year Student Research Experience

The Erich Vogt First Year Summer Research Experience (FYSRE) is a program offering summer research experiences to budding academic stars after their First Year Physics courses at the University of British Columbia

International Student Programs

Students from around the world come to TRIUMF to further their research careers. TRIUMF liaises with a variety of organizations to facilitate and coordinate research opportunities for international students. It is also possible for international students to do research at TRIUMF outside of the programs covered by those agencies.

Graduate Students

Thesis Opportunities

Graduate Students can do research at TRIUMF visiting with their supervisors, or they can be resident here under the supervision of a laboratory research scientist.  Although TRIUMF is not a degree-granting institution, our research scientists are affiliated with universities with whom students can obtain their degrees.

Postdoctoral Fellows

Potential postdoctoral fellows applying to TRIUMF apply directly through a job posting. Postdoctoral Fellows are considered employees.

Postdoctoral Fellows are represented by the Graduate Students and Postdocs Society (GAPS).

  • Position length is typically 1-3 years.
  • There is not a standardized salary for postdoctoral fellows at TRIUMF, as your base annual salary is set by the supervisor. The estimated average is $55,000.
