Public Events
Location: 506 Princess St, Kingston, ON K7L 1C5
Date: December 2, 2024
Time: 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Astronomy on Tap in Kingston is continuing in person with a special Dark Matter Day, “Pints of Particles” edition!!
This free event is in the Living Room of The Mansion (506 Princess St, Kingston) on Monday, December 2nd at 6:30 pm.
Local astro-buff Mark Richardson will host three fantastic scientists: astroparticle physicists Guillaume Giroux, Matthew Stukel, and astrophysicist Brandon Shane. Giroux will focus on how 2,000-year-old lead can help in detecting dark matter. Stukel will focus on how one of the coldest places in the universe (at only 0.15K) can result in some of the most sensitive dark matter detectors in the world. Shane will talk about how the northern lights caused an 8-hour power outage in Quebec in 1989 and how such an event could happen even today.
There will be time for questions and discussion, and the speakers and other local scientists will mingle with the audience between and after the talks, providing lots of opportunities to chat with some keen astronomers. There will also be a trivia session with questions related to astronomy physics, with prizes given out to the winners!
The event is free and 19+.
The Mansion serves alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks, and food will be available to be ordered.
Space is limited, so we encourage you to arrive on time! The pre-show starts at 6:30 pm, and the main event starts at 7 pm.
