Emerging Jets

Motivated by the possibility of asymmetric dark matter, I will describe a new object that can arise at high energy colliders we have termed emerging jets. An emerging jet is completely invisible when it is created, but its energy slowly emerges into visible Standard Model particles as it traverses the detector. I will describe strategies that can be used to discover emerging jets even if they are produced very rarely, and describe the experimental searches that have been attempted thus far. I will also describe ongoing work exploring how to use machine learning techniques to record emerging jets with relatively low energy.

McDonald Insititute seminars bring together experimental and theoretical astroparticle physicists and astronomers. They are held approximately fortnightly, September to November and January to March, and on an ad hoc basis outside of term. They currently take place on Tuesdays at 2:30 PM on Zoom. Contact Aaron Vincent if you would like to attend.
