Science Communication (Part 2)

Science has the most impact when its relevance to the public is understood. How do you communicate your research, and how do you know when you’re being understood? Scientists often have opportunities to speak and write about their work to various audiences, including collaborators in a team meeting, a physics department for a colloquium, the public as part of an outreach event, etc. Successful communication helps create a science-literate, and informed society that is excited and inspired by scientific progress, fueling further innovation, and poised to tackle global and existential problems.

When information is communicated through stories, it is better remembered, understood, and empathized with. This workshop is for (aspiring) researchers of any level who want to communicate their research or science in a socially relevant and impactful way.

Speakers: Mark Richardson and Zac Kenny are part of the external relations team of the McDonald Institute, who routinely produce programs to communicate science to various audiences. In this workshop they discuss best practices they apply to their own work and give space for participants to develop their own approaches for future science communication opportunities.
