The SNOLAB group in the Department of Physics at Carleton University in Ottawa has an immediate opening for a Laboratory Technician to aid in the development and installation of novel cryogenic detectors and laboratory equipment as part of a research facility at Carleton.  Activities include the installation and maintenance of cryogenic and utility piping systems, assembly and testing of ultra-high vacuum components, assembly and operation of novel cryogenic detector systems, and assembly, maintenance, and operation of laboratory equipment, all in a clean room environment.

The successful candidate should have the following qualifications and abilities:

  • Familiarity with installing and assembling equipment.
  • Familiarity with working in a laboratory environment and with vacuum systems and testing equipment will be considered assets.
  • Experience with programming languages and such as Python and/or C++ for data processing and analysis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Organizational and planning skills, work coordination.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow complex instructions and protocols accurately.

Example tasks to be performed include:

  • Operate laboratory equipment such as cryogenic systems (cryostat), spectrometer, profilometer, and data acquisition systems.
  • Conduct experiments and collect data, prepare materials for experiments, record observations, measurements, and other relevant information.
  • Maintain accurate records of experimental procedures, observations, and results in electronic or written formats.
  • Perform equipment maintenance on laboratory equipment to maintain optimal and safe working conditions.
  • Research and source/recommend equipment and parts for use in building process systems and projects.

The successful candidate will join our research team and will perform duties under the direction of the project manager.  Safety training and on-the-job training for specific tasks will be provided.  The position is for two years with the possibility of renewal.  Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications.
