Mechanical Engineer For nEXO at McGill University, Canada

The experimental particle physics group at McGill University is looking for a Mechanical Engineer for the mechanical design of scientific instrumentation as part of our local nEXO team. nEXO is a next-generation Astroparticle physics experiment. At McGill we will develop infrastructure to characterize large area photosensors at -110oC in a vacuum environment.
We are an energetic group with members at all academic stages and collaborate closely with engineers and physicists at our national and international partner institutions.

The successful candidate would also be expected to provide functional supervision, technical guidance and training to other Research Assistants.
Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting with the design of scientific infrastructure and performing mechanical feasibility studies
- Preparing engineering drawings for mechanical components using standard engineering practices
- Coordinating with in-house and external machine shops for component fabrication, modifying designs where appropriate if required for particular fabrication techniques, and inspecting components after fabrication
- Supporting the local group in the assembling and testing of detector components
Qualifications:
- Ability to work collaboratively and to discuss ideas in a productive manner
- Good communication skills, with accurate record-keeping abilities
- Ability to work on multiple projects in parallel and to set priorities Experience and education
- Minimum of a MSc/MEng degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
- Proficient in mechanical modelling and design software
- Familiarity with fabrication and manufacturing processes such as milling, laser cutting, and 3D printing
Additional assets (not required)
- Design experience, experience with cryogenics, CFD simulations, or high- vacuum systems
- Experience in FEA software in the domain of structural mechanics and thermal dynamics
- P.Eng. designation and ability to stamp engineering or piping drawings in Quebec
The successful candidate will join our research team and will perform duties under the direction of a scientist. Safety training and on-the-job training for specific tasks will be provided. This is a full-time position, starting with a one-year contract with the possibility of renewal.
