Our Highly Qualified Personnel at NEWS-G
Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) are early-career researchers and staff at every level and institution across the Canadian Astroparticle Physics Community. This includes undergraduate researchers, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, engineers, technicians, and research support staff.
New Experiments with Spheres-Gas (NEWS-G) is a new technology being developed to detect dark matter particles.
NEWS-G uses a copper sphere filled with a noble gas, which will be ionized when a dark matter particle passes through. A probe at the centre of the sphere will measure characteristics of the ion to determine if it is a dark matter particle. Prototypes were tested in an underground laboratory in France, and the final version of the experiment was installed at SNOLAB in late 2020.
Opportunities at NEWS-G may be on site at SNOLAB in Sudbury, Ontario, at the research lab at Queen’s University, or a combination of on campus and on site duties. Those interested in opportunities with NEWS-G can expect to work on hardware calibration, project management, simulations, and data analysis.
